Adolescent Suicide

  • Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States and the 2nd leading cause of death for youth ages 12-18.
  • Every year approximately 44,965 Americans ages 10 and up die by suicide  
  • In 2016, there was  adolescents ages 15-24 were found to have a suicide rate of 13.15 for every 100,00 individuals  
  • Daily,  there are over 3,041 suicide attempts made by adolescents in grades 9-12, with 4 out of 5 attempters showing warning signs
  • In 2017, 17.2% of high school youth considered attempting suicide with females considering suicide more often than males.
  • 13.6% of high school adolescents developed a suicide plan
  • 7.4% attempted suicide 1+ times in that past year with 9.3% being female and 9.8% being African American
  • 2.4% were injured during an attempt result in physical injury, poisoning, or overdose requiring medical attention
